Seeing frost on your car’s windshield this morning may have tempted you to run back inside. Unfortunately you can’t completely hide from the cold weather, but you can make the way you heat your home more efficient and lower your energy bills. Read on for part two on energy bill saving tips.

Tip 4: Get Your Heating System Inspected or Serviced
Many people forget your heat pump needs annual servicing. Scheduling a service or inspection appointment can feel like a hassle, but it should save you headaches and big expenses down the road. Think of it as the equivalent to an oil change for your car.

If you have a gas-fired furnace you should have the flue, ducts, heat exchanger and burner checked or adjusted. If you have an oil-fired boiler you should have the flue cleaned, fuel filter changed and adjustments made to the fuel jets.

Tip 5: Install A Programmable Thermostat
Programmable thermostats let you preset automated temperature increases and decreases. Lowering the temperature for several hours while you’re at work or sleeping can reduce your energy bill. Nowadays programmable thermostats are easy to use and install. Some even come with a fancy remote!

Whether or not you have a programmable thermostat it is important to avoid drastically cranking up the temperature when you’re cold. The furnace can only pump out heat so quickly and this will result in the furnace running longer than needed. Avoiding constant thermostat adjustments in general will help you conserve fuel.

Tip 6: Lower Your Water Heater Thermostat Temperature Setting
The optimal temperature for your water heater is 120 degrees Fahrenheit (55 degrees Celsius). You want warm water, but don’t need it to be scalding!

While you’re there, put a water heater blanker over your hot water heater. Many older heaters are not well-insulated so tossing the blanket on can help you save money in the long run. Be sure to not cover the heater’s thermostat, top, bottom or burner compartment.
